My youngest son has just told us he's going off with his friends family next year on holiday.

Yipee! for the first time in around 25 years OH & I can go on holiday on our own. We both like sun sea swimming etc but don't want all inclusive or waterparks and screaming kids ( sorry to those who have screaming kids but we've been there done that now want some peace & quiet)

We like places you can walk around market squares on an evening, go to places of interest but has an accessible beach. Most of all we want somewhere different as over the years we've done the holiday hot spots but have steered clear of more interesting places with fear of boring the kids.

Any suggestions, especially specific resorts or hotels would be lovely. I won't stay in anything below 4* that's not being snobby I just want luxury on a holiday. No long haul , I can only manage up to 5 hours on a plane. Many Thanks.

Hi Prudie, probably middle to end of June, no earlier as they are doing A levels, but hopefully before the main School Holidays. I can cope with heat but not cold. Thanks.

If we don't know where you have been how can we suggest anywhere different?

Anyway how about Northern Spain?

Many people go to Southern Spain and ignore Northern Spain.

Much less touristy and milder weather (parts of it look like Britain with lush grass and many trees unlike parched Southern Spain).

Years ago many people left Britain (when it was being invaded by Romans etc) and settled in Northern Spain to it has a British / Celtic connection. In the Galicia region the main local instrument is the bagpipes !

While it is part of Spain it is almost like a different country and they don't eat what we think of as traditional Spanish food.

Some ideas here

Guilbert thanks for your reply

Without listing all destinations I would say we are NOT looking for your typical family package holiday destination. We are thinking perhaps Madeira or Sardinia, we honeymooned on the Amalfi Coast but are saving Sorrento for our 30th Wedding Anniversary in a few years time. The eastern European destinations fascinate me but I would need personal recommendations of a fantastic place & hotel to visit . Just a few ideas really I'm open to suggestions ( well polite ones lol!)

Thanks sqad, Mahon is one of our favourite places & a lovely hotel but we've been to Menorca a few times so want to take this opportunity to go somewhere we've not been before.
Lydia.....I understand.
Aunt Lydia check this out, palachora Crete and I would put money on that this would suit you.
Why not try a Mediterranean cruise on an upmarket cruise ship in a top cabin.
Question Author
jordy we like Crete but have always gone to the Heraklion area. How long does it take to get to Palacora from the airport?

Guilbert: I've just been browsing those links you gave me, there are some amazing places!
Malta is nice with a great bus service to get around.
Greek islands are nice, not unbearably hot in June, market squares usually available, quite often antiquities to visit on the island or nearby. Turkish coastal resorts similar.
From chania bus station 1hour 40 from Heraklion airport to chania bus station 1 hour20;we have always flew into chania from Glasgow so we didn’t have the extra traveling time from Heraklion, but honestly I really think you would love palachora.after spending 4 weeks in kisamoss we are of to palachora on Wednesday for 4 weeks.
I was in Greece in May and it probably averaged 35 degrees. It didn't feel too hot though.
Spoiler: non-sensible answer to follow .....

Seeing how you haven't actually specified a budget and you want luxury, how's about Necker Island:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necker_Island_(British_Virgin_Islands)

You can hire the whole island for $42 000 a night, or you can hire a villa for $27 000 for a week.

We can dream can't we :)
yow, that is hot, ummmm. A few years since we used to go there but it was usually high 20s in May, low 30s in June but with afternoon breezes. But I guess the climate's changing there too.
Jno we went to Antalya in June one year and the heat was horrendous we went on a cruise to camel beach and couldn’t walk on the sand ,we were all bare footed the skipper of the boat made us remove our footwear so we couldn’t mark his decking, not a happy memory.

Ummmm we've been thinking about Malta as well can you recommend any hotels?

Sqad: A med. cruise is out . OH is not a sailor and would have to see land he could feasible swim to ( I know) at all times lol!

jordy I've see a lovely hotel called the Libyan Princess in Palaiochóra but the price is just for accommodation. Do you mind me asking how much the air fare return is from Glasgow?
No aunt Lydia don’t mind at all only two pleased to help £ 136 ,64 Total with Ryan air for us both
