Why do contestants when asked a question they don't know the answer to, say it was before my time

I wasn't around at the time , but I know the great plague of London was in 1665

Probably because they want an excuse for giving a wrong answer rather than admitting they are as smart as a bag of spanners.

It's a fair reason to give. Not everything before one's time is taught to you, and it may be unusual to have found out and committed to memory.

Can't claim to remember many dates though. 1066 is likely as far as I get without a websearch.

It's a fair answer if the question is about a TV programme, film or music popular before they were born, or a gadget no longer in use.

Maybe not surprising if it's about the less prominent people of a political party decades ago.

Not so forgivable if the subject is a significant event or very famous person.

Another annoying remark " it's an "educated" guess" More like a wild guess.

And "we don't know what form the chaser is on" irritates me. It's not a matter of form.  It's whether they know the answers or not!!!

what continually amazes me is why people who seem to know very little would even go on a quiz show.

I call my inverse law of knowledge, the more you know the more you know you don't know. Thus people who know nothing think they know everything.

^There's an irony there somewhere.

Naomi, why do you find it necessary to continually insult me? You are a mod you should set an example.

You two should get a room 🤣
