Venice

Does anyone have any wonderful walks in Venice to share. I'd like to see the "real" venice, off the beaten track so to speak. I'd like to visit some print shops etc.
Also any ideas where to stay. This is my first holiday in five years following a really terrible car crash. So I'd like to be as prepared as possible. Many thanks.

Search in Google for Venice Walks or Walks Venice, there are LOADS of hits, particularly for guided walks you have to pay for.

If you want to see the 'real' Venice then head away from San Marco....try walking around Cannaregio, Castello or San Polo. Take a guide book by all means but it's fun sometimes to leave it in the hotel and just go wandering.

For an entertaining book, written by someone who loved Venice, try Venice for Pleasure by J.G. Links. It's not your normal guide book but will give you more of a feel for the real Venice rather than the tourist Venice.

If you're interested in print you might be interested in seeing the Venice map printed in 1500 made from a wood cutting. I think it' s in the Correr Museum.

I would agree....when I was in venice I left the guide book at the hotel and just wandered. I found the most beautiful hidden parts of the real Venice away from the crowds. The thing with the guide books is that they take everyone the same way, I suggest grabbing a gorgeous ice cream from one of the many vendors and just walking and enjoying it all. Don't worry about getting lost that's part of the fun!
