I have also been to Madiera which i also enjoyed.
When you say you'd like to go to Porto, do you mean Oporto in the north of Portugal? If you don't know much about it I suggest you google Oporto and read up on what to expect in that area. http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=oporto& btnG=Search&meta=
The capital Lisbon and the coastal resorts such as Estoril are another popular area - you can also go to Sintra from here.
The area rosyherb is referring to - ie the Algarve is 600 miles south of Oporto.
Ryanair fly to Oporto, also TAP the Portugese airlinehttp://www.flightmapping.com/Europe/Portugal/Porto/

According to the airport's website, the only direct scheduled flights from the UK are with Ryanair (from Liverpool & Stansted) and with TAP (from Gatwick & Heathrow):

For accommodation, check out the Pensao Estoril (about 28 to 30 per night single, 17 to 19 pppn twin or double, en suite). That's on this website (with many other possible options). Use the 'Additional Search Options' to select both 'Guesthouses' and 'Budget Hotels':

Most people stay in Alberfero the main resort. I stayed close to the old town but we used to go for a walk to the new town about 1 mile down the road from the old town. I got terribly addicted to spit roast chicken. Delicious! We used to get one everyday either for lunch or for dinner. It was fantastic. It is not a bad place to stay. We stayed in a good hotel on the main road just outside the town.
Hi, thanks for answers, I have a better idea about few places now. We decide to go to Algarve, propably Albufeira area. Can anyone know nice B&B, which is cheaper/good value, but not nasty supprises? I thougt to go to Residence Vila Bela, but read terrible story about toilet smell, hygiene and not window view. Any advice? Jenga, where did you stay? Sounds lovely...... Thanks
easyjet fly there or nearabouts
we went to algarve and rented an 2 bed appartment for 1 week from the letting agency.
it was very basic 70's decor. had amazing view of the beach.
most of the holiday apartments were 2oo meters behind us.
we had our car and drove off the beaten track and found an amazing market where local produce, food and wonderful music were aplenty, sadly i cant recall the names.
we seen the real portugal and i fell in love with it.
if its possible hire a car and just drive!! have fun. radio.

I'm really sorry aliczech this is the first time I had more time to browse on the computer and didn't notice you had asked me a question, I don't spend enough time on my pc. I stayed in a 4* hotel on the main road just outside the main town of Albufeira. I cannot remember the name of it but it was something like Cero Algoa. Well I am sure it began with C. It was quite expensive and about 12 years ago now.
When I went there, I booked through http://www.holistay.com/portugal/ and got a good deal. Or you could also use http://www.travelwise.com as they sometimes have good deals too.
