I foresee needing to take a flight out of Stansted in the very early morning. Does anyone have a suggestion as to where nearby I can find a cheap room for two with good transport connections to/from the airport ? All I want is a clean bed so price and convenience are the only imperatives.

Theres loads, just type '' hotels near Stansted '' on Google.
or guest houses.
Don't know the cost, but try Holiday Inn Express.

A short bus ride to the terminal, but add in the cost of £2 per person for the bus ride.
(The bus is free the other way, if you arrive at the airport the previous evening.)

The Radisson ?

It's right next to the Terminal, and it's really nice.

AND ... you can leave your car in their car park while you're away !
Ah, but JJ, Karl did use the word cheap in the question.
He could do a runner.
Okay, okay, but ...

What the Radisson loses a bit on price ...

... it makes up for by being very, very, very convenient.

Even at Gatwick we don't have hotels THAT convenient.

(Actually, that's not quite true. There is the Sofitel, but last time I stayed there it cost me £300, which is a lot when I live half an hour from the Terminal)
There must be many B & Bs in the area. Here is a pub with rooms in nearby Stansted Mountfitchet.

I don't know if they would provide early morning transport though.
They have at least one minibus which does trips to the airport, but that might just be for if you park yor car with them.
Yes, but ...

Thank you for the replies. When the time comes, I will not spend more on the bed than the cost of the flight (Radisson), else I would fly more conveniently from elsewhere at twice the price - simples.
The trick is to stay in the town of Bishop's Stortford. It is between 9 minutes (fastest train) and 19 minutes (slowest train) from the town to the airport by train, and the first train arrives at Stansted at 05:39. The train costs £4.10.

Alternatively, it is a 10-minute (£12) taxi ride from Bishop's Stortford to the airport, and there are taxis on the rank at Bishop's Stortford train station.

The second trick is to fly with hand luggage only so that you can do online check-in and go straight to security. On the Stansted Airport website, the advice for passengers who have checked in online is "Please present yourself at security at least one hour before scheduled departure."

This is one B&B in Bishop's Stortford:

(single room £40.80)
