The authorised car hire companies at Larnaka Airport are Europcar, Budget, Sixt and the local firm Andreas Petsas & Sons. Their website confirms the information in my Wikitravel link, i.e: "Crossing to the Occupied Areas: Additional insurance cover is required! E-mail us for further information"
Perhaps it might be worth contacting them?

Thanks Buenchico I will try that, the info I have is that you pay for extra insurance but if you have problems with the vehicle you have to arrange to get it to the border crossing yourself with no compensation. So I was looking into getting a transfer then hiring over there. Just wondered if anyone else had encountered this situation and how they overcame it
It is not easy to do at all, you may have a long wait to get insurance at the border ( past experience standing in 35 degrees heat for over an hour. ) best to get taxi from LCA to the Northern side and hire the car there. The above seems to get good reviews and covers all you need. i. e. Transfer and hire.
Thanks everyone, I have managed to book a car from the airport which includes "non-occupied Cyprus" (Northern) for an extra €50. So hopefully all's well.
A bit late I know, but I've only just seen this question. Are you sure that you've got this right? I would have thought that non-occupied Cyprus was the southern part, not the northern. There is only Turkey that recognises northern Cyprus, the rest of the world considers it occupied.
