It doesn't really matter but as luggage gets tossed around a bit it is less likely to get damaged if it is hard. Also with the softer type, you sometimes see them with broken zips at the end of the journey if they've been packed too full. Would definitely recommend you tie some brightly coloured ribbon to the handle or use a bright strap around the case. It helps you to identify your luggage on the carousel at the destination. You would be surprised how many cases look alike when you are waiting for yours!
Yes it doesn't matter but the shell ones obviously weigh more so you won't be able to take as much. Best to get the ones with wheels and do not put anything in them like your front door keys as I found out to my cost when my luggage was lost and after a long flight back from US I was then locked out of my house !!!
If I was you, I would go for Hard case, but I would put a case inside a case, go shopping while you are there cos you will easily fill the empty case with all the cheap clothes out there, Florida mall worth a visit, also be prepared for the case to be opened even if you lock it they may break the lock off to check contents, security is really tight now,but you will love it, going off the subject of cases I know but look out for some cheap eating places, like "Dennys" and "Ponderosa" great value, have a great time
