Passport validity with a twist

I have searched the UK Border Agency website and previous questions on here to no avail, so here goes.

We live in Asia and are visiting the UK (flying on Monday). My daughter has dual citizenship. Her UK passport runs out on 19 October 2011, which is 6 months and 8 days after we set off. We will be leaving the UK with less than 6 months of validity. Getting back here is not a problem, her other passport will do that.

'Expert' websites contradict each other, the UK Embassy cannot (will not?) help and the helpline (which I have to give credit card details to so than can charge) said they didn't know and I should write in so they can consider it.

Summary: does the 6 months rule into the UK apply to UK citizens travelling from outside the EU, and if so, when is the effective date, arrival or departure?

Have you spoken to your airline and or travel agent? the carrier get fined if she's not allowed to enter UK. They may have a quicker method of getting an answer. Don't you have an UK Consulate / Embassy where you are that you can visit in person?

how long are you staying in the UK couldn't you renew it whilst your over here?

I don't see why it should be a problem; she is entering as a UK national on a UK passport. Unless the rules have changed, whether she has 1 day or 1 year left shouldn't matter. If arriving on a non-UK passport with a visa then I would expect the 6-month rule to apply.

surely you can renew whilst here ? they do it in London in one day by fast track but its pricey.
My pal has twin boys and their passports ran out after 5 years, in Dubai where they live, they refused to let her travel to Oz with the boys,with expired passports they could only travel to their country of origin, I met her at Heathrow + twins with the appropriate renewal forms, we went to Petty France the following day they renewed same day and she flew back the following day. Why not get them renewed at the consulate in Dubai ? she tried and they said they no longer renewed there but sent the passports to Germany and it would take 10 days and she had a wedding to get to in Oz.
The twins were born here and when we went to get their first passports they were rejected because the babies were asleep and they had their eyes closed, we had to poke the poor little devils till they bawled and then take a picture with their eyes open !

The UK does not have a 6 month rule for its own citizens

I'm not fully convinced it has for anyone else either - sites vary between 3 months and length of visit
