Can I take a hotbrush powered by a butane gas cartridge on an aeroplane?

Yes but you can`t take any spare cartridges.

No you shoudnt - gas cannisters assuming it is a Camping Gaz one or similar are not designed for being at 6000 feet the pressure of which the plane is set to.

The old tickets for planes use to have a specific warning on the back page not to pack them - and the Camping Gaz logo was often used - was that advertising.....

In fact, there was an incident on a PIA plane carrying pilgrims to the Hadj in Saudi when someone tried to use a stove on the plane to make tea and whooomph up went the flame and there was a fire aboard. Not suggesting that you intend using your brush...

CG make special cartridges and cannisters for mountaineers at high altitude.

DTcrosswordfan - surely the canisters to which you refer are much bigger than the one I'm talking about? Whether the size makes a difference or not I don't know but my cartridge is really tiny compared to the one my picnic stove uses.

I would still remove it - if they find it they will take your brush......far better to do what Tony suggested - buy a cartridge over there.

ICAO regulations - yes no question you can definitely take a hydrocarbon powered hair curler. It has to have the safety catch over the heating element (which is would as it`s enclosed in plastic) and you can`t take spare cartridges. As far as the dangerous goods regs are concerned it can be taken in carry-on or hold luggage but can`t be used in flight. I`m not sure how it equates with the liquids policy though so I would stick it in the hold just to be sure.

Please trust me guys - I know what I`m talking about. I would probably fail my exams each year if I got that one wrong. DT look at the bit about restricted items on your link. It`s allowed, the restrictions being the ones I mentioned

They'll probably let you carry it .. but not refills.
You have to draw the line somewhere .. but a refill cylinder could easily be made into an explosive device .. not a problem in itself on the aircraft, so long as handled and stored correctly.
Cigarette lighters the same gas .. and similar storage capacity.

Thanks for all contributions. I am flying with Thomson Airways. I don't fancy ringing them to ask. I tried to ring them recently to ask if I could use my Kindle on board but hung up after waiting ages for a reply.

I`ve just looked at thompsons website and it said the same as I did. That`s because they`re ICAO regs (Internation civil aviation) You can use a Kindle as well.

Thanks 237SJ - killed two birds with one stone. Out of curiosity I asked the same question on the TripAdvisor site and they have removed it for no reason that I can think of but not before somebody replied saying if I tried to take it on board it would be taken off me!

if you must take it then seperate the gas cylinder from the actual hot brush and wrap the cylinder in plastic bag in case it leaks on your clothes. All the same I am glad I am not flying on your plane just in case ...... it exploded.
It would be advisible to ring the airline.Have a nice holiday and take electric tonges as a back up.
