If you are travelling then I'd just use your bank card in the country you are in.

Check out the Post Office, it varies, one year we got the best exchange from the Co-op, I don't know for sure but is there a web-site to look at?

We found the best rate in a booth in Cash Converters, all legit and a better rate than the Post Office, where we usually go.

I think M&S don't charge commission - but their rates aren't so good, so they make it up that way. I use the site dzug has linked to.

When they first started doing currency they set out to be the best on the High Street. They are now middle of the road

If you've got a Nectar card, I think Sainsbury's do good deals.

Do check whether commission is charged or not. Generally the places with the best rates charge commission, those with not as good rates don't. It can work out better for you to exchange on no commission than go somewhere with better rates and pay out a lot in commission.

I have always found my local American Express are best. Or change when you get where your going you normally get 2 cents more than UK.

I have found http://www.bestforeignexchange.com to be the best - no commission and much better than Travelex , M & S or the post office. However they are London based which means a £7.50 fee to be paid for posting by special delivery mail if you cannot get to one of their London offices.
