Gibralter vs Malta

Hi guys

I am taking my mum (late 70s) and my ex mum-in-law (late 60s) on holiday for a week. We had originally booked Sicily but that has fallen thru as they now say they can't do single travellers (even when a suppliment was offered!) So I now have two very upset OAPs.

I am now scouring the likes of lastminute.com etc and have come up with two alternative destinations : Malta or Gibralter.

Which one is the best option do you think?

They are both fairly active, love shopping and sightseeing. So I want somewhere with enough old ruins, towns, things to do as well as somewhere with a pool etc where they can have chill out days too.

Any of you guys that have been to either can you give me your opinion on how suitable either would be. ta

Only my opinion of course but I think Gibralta`s horrible. It`s just duty free shops and a port.

Sorry I mean Gibralter. It would help if I got the name right. I`ve been to Malta but many years ago. There`s certainly more to do there.

I agree with 237SJ - Gibralta is horrible. Not been to Malta but I've heard that it is very nice.

I agree. After riding the cable car and seeing the Barbary apes, Gibraltar has got very little going for it.

Malta, on the other hand, is beautiful. I'm sure you'll love Mdina, the Mosta Dom, Valletta harbour, the beaches etc.

i have only ever been to Malta, passed by Gibraltar, on way to spain.
However i loved Malta, something for everyone, great scenery, lovely people, Valletta great city, sorry that might not be correct spelling, and best of all is you could visit Gozo which i consider a little gem, not far by boat and The Blue Grotto is something special. I spent a very happy time there, food good, all mixes, because it has been occupied by so many people over the centuries, arab, british, spanish i think, you name it. It was recommended to me by a mate, and i loved it. There are bits that are very touristy, and some where all the young hang out, and night life can be loud, if you want a quiet time, not having been to Gib i can't compare it.

Very little to do in Gibralter. Go for Malta.

Never been to Malta, but as someone has already said, after the apes and the cable car, Gib's a bit limited, especially for older, possibly less mobile people. It's not horrible though, we lived there and were never stuck for things to do, even when the border was still closed!

Gibralter is a hole - when we went, some time ago, it just smelt like sewers!

check out Malta tourist website, will give you an idea of area to stay in, don't just rely on travel agent, they won't always tell you that the hotel, resort you are staying its a hotbed of nightclubs, cafes and the like, of course your ladies might enjoy a night on the tiles.....

St Paul's Bay is lovely. Don't forget to have a day in Gozo, a short ferry trip from Malta. You pass the island of Comino where some famous writer lived. Sorry I can't remember his name but it's 25 years since my in-laws used to live there and we visited with the children most summers.
