A really lovely place is Doolin. There are about 5 pubs in the village and local music at night. It's got a real irish mysterious feel to it. The cliffs of moher aren't far away.
bunratty village - restaurants and hotels, quaint, twee
ennis - a larger town with a nice medieval centre, but probably in the wrong direction for your later plans.
if you are prepared to go that way on, killaloe on lough derg is very nice to visit, with lots of history too.

failing that you could always head towards limerick.

Ok everyone here's an update. We stayed in Lahinch, then Tralee, Dingle, Killarney, down to Kinsale and then Bunratty. Had a day in Ennis which was lovely and out to the lake at Corofin. really good time despite the weather, thanks all.
