Going for a day out tomorrow but the beach is looking unlikely (the one we like has a high tide at 2.30). Looking for somewhere up to 1 1/2 hours from Hereford (have done Bristol Zoo, Sea Life Centre, Techniquest) so need some new ideas. Thanks.

I have got my grand-tiddler coming to stay in a couple of weeks and so was surfing the net for inexpensive things to do with him.

I found this;

It looks like fun......is there anything near you?
I was going to suggest the Avon Valley Railway but you might want to save that for NEXT Sunday, when the kids can go on the steam trains free if they take their teddy bears with them!

I always remember Blists Hill in Shropshire (grew up there) very fondly from when I was little. Around Ironbridge itself is lovely too.

There is (was at least!) a lovely pub by the river right by the bridge itself which could be lovely for lunch in nice weather.
This would be close too, was great fun when I was a kid...

They used to have boat tours near Symonds Yat too and sure there was a butterfly world as well?

Hi all - still undecided about what to do tomorrow. Think the trains will be too dull for the littlest ones, I can't stand Ironbridge (after being forced to go there) although I do like the sound of the pub. JTH - nothing like that round here. We go for walks at Symmonds Yat quite a bit. Might have to be Techni Quest again (it has been a while since we went).
If they're not already fully booked, you could have some family fun geocaching at the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre:

There's a small, but possibly quite interesting exhibition there as well:

That's on the way to Shrewsbury, where you could take a river trip:

Park Hall is just beyond your specified radius, but it might be worth considering:

What about the West Midland Safari Park?

(Just over an hour from Hereford)

Thanks Buenchico - WMSP is a rip-off, not many animals but a large amusement park (which is expensive!), last time we went the youngest lost is hat (and it was nice hat too) in the bat house of all places - no chance of finding it!
They were advertising boat trips in Shrewsbury last time I was there a few weeks ago (my home town) and looked ok. there was a landing stage right by the Armory bar (lovely bar and lets small children in regardless of whether you are eating) near the Welsh Bridge. Avoid the Wetherspoons (Kings Head I think) if not eating as they won't let children in otherwise.

The Boathouse Pub is always popular by the riverside overlooking the Quarry (park) and the Quarry could be good for a picnic in nice weather, take some food for the ducks and grab an ice cream and there always used to be a small play area.

You could have a wander around the castle grounds too.

Alternatively, is Waterworld in Stoke too far?
Question Author
Thanks for the info Jenna -Stoke is over 2 hours away so a bit far really.

Just checked, and Tecniquest is really good value for us - family ticket is £23 (2 adults and 3 children) and under 4's are free. Bargain!
Problem solved then! My other suggestion was going to be Acton Scott (working old farm museum) and Cardingmill Valley, both near Church Stretton. Great drive up the Burr Way and up over the Longmynd (though not for the fainthearted!). We used to go walk up the valley and paddle in the stream, take trays and slide down the side of the valley and play roundersm hide and seek etc... up the top (when older).
There's a route around Hereford itself......!?!
