Sorry, I'm not taking the urine honest, but you did make me laugh with ferry!

after the day I've had it's the only laugh I've had and it did cheer me up

It would be cheaper by plane. A few ships sail regularly to Canada but only carry a few passengers.
My YES answerjust referred to the question in your title: yes you can go by boat.
As sandyRoe says, it's usually cheaper to go by plane. On a ship you are paying for accommodation and food for up to 7 nights each way
Ferry? That's the Queen Mary!
It's much more expensive to go by sea. There are no 'ferry' services, per se.

You either have to pay to travel on a luxury cruise liner

or you have to travel on one of the few freighter which carry passengers. They can take ages (often going via other European ports, such as Amsterdam or Lisbon, before they cross the Atlantic), with fares running into thousands of dollars:
