Rail and Sail tickets
I travel about once a fortnight to visit my girlfriend from Crewe to Dublin via Holyhead. I buy a rail/sail ticket which costs 70 quid. For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.You can usually buy rail tickets in advance which work out much cheaper - you need to ask at the station where you buy the ticket. I believe there are only so many at the much-reduced price, so the earlier you can book it, the better. I don't know about the sailing side of it though, the prices you are paying for the combined ticket lok about right. http://www.seat61.com/Ireland.htm#Fares

But AFAICS no advantage price wise in booking in advance. The tickets are actually very little more than the ferry alone so a real bargain
