I've heard it's really hard to visit the Galapagos Isles, is this true and if so why?

You can get to GI via Ecuador and it's not that difficult but it is pricey. You can stay in Ecudaor for up to 90 days per annum without a passport but during the high season a flight to GI can be a four-figure sum. Flights leave daily from Quito and Guayaquil airports.

In 1959 (the 100th Anniversary of the publication of Darwin's Origin of Species), the Galapagos Islands became Ecuador's first National Park and the non-profit Charles Darwin Foundation was established to assist in the preservation of the islands. In 1978 The Islands were declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO underlining its universal value for mankind. Because its such an important place that founded the Origin of Species theory, they dont want hordes of tourists marching through and spoiling it.
