Booking a very hurried and last minute trip to New Orleans (long story), but really want to make sure I stay in the best area, or at least in walking distance form the best area. Actually, walking distance from best may be better (slightly quieter and cheaper perhaps?)....
Can anyone assist with the areas please?

We stayed at the Omni Royal a few years ago. Possibly not the cheapest but an easy stroll to Bourbon Street and the Mississippi. Natchez steam boat cruise was a highlight.
Hubby wants to go there when he retires next year so am planning to surprise him. Told they have a great blues festival there in February each year. Have a great time and maybe I can pick your brains when you get back.
Stayed at the Hilton – St. Charles Avenue last year. 4* hotel was available at a good price, booking made via Expedia.

Avoid any hotels in the heart of the French Quarter unless you enjoy the smell of an open sewer.

I wanted the Omni Royal, but they were fully booked for the Saturday of our stay (available all other days, how frustrating). I have plumped for the La Quinta, Downtown. Reasonably priced and easy walking distance from French Quarter and mostly good reviews on Trip Advisor.
