if you are flying on a 'budget' ailine there is absolutely no room for error - check out the dimesnsions allowed for whichever airline you plan to fly with and don't even think about exceeding them!
Does the company you're going to fly with not have details on their web-site?
yes, it will be on their site and varies for each airline.

I pushed my luck with Easyjet, and got away with it!

Ok thanks not sure what airline i am going with yet but it will be the cheaper ones! I will have to book my tickets and see what their deal is! thanks for the info
Each airline will have details on its website about maximum weight and/or dimensions. You must be sure that your bag will fit in that space - otherwise you'll have to put in the hold and be charged considerably extra. Checking in hold luggage is always more expensive at check-in than it is if you pay on-line beforehand.
not sure if it was true but there was something on a website yesterday saying ryanair staff are to get bonuses for catching people out with this. Over the years while standing in the queues going on flights I have seen them get more and more strict going along with the stand thing to measure and if it doesn't fit as mentioned you will be charged a very hefty price. Each site shows their companies measurements.
