Shanghai in July? Keep to indoor activities and take a nose peg with you!

Yu Yuan Gardens are a must.

A walk through the old quarter is truly fascinating.

A walk along the Bund to view 1930's architecture on one side of the river and truly futuristic buildings on the opposite bank.

Nanjing Road for shopping.

If you have another day, I'd recommend taking the train to nearby Suzhou.

Jade Buddha Temple (a definite must), old town, Bund (at night if you can make it), there's a water town just outside (cant remember the name - check lonely planets website), go to restaurants in the back streets for the best food and don't be shy to try the steet food - shanghai is famous throughout China for its dumplings!
