My luggage weighs more than the 44lbs allowance with scandanavian airlines.  Could anyone tell me what sort of charge to expect for an additional 10lbs?  I also wish to take my laptop in my hand luggage with a few other things, these all weigh under the 8kg allowance but i'm going to be carrying more than one bag, will this be a problem?  Ive seen people with giant bags on the aircraft before...

I'm guessing you're from the USA, but only because of the reference to 44lbs instead of either stones or Kgs.

Pick your country and wait for the new page to load.  Top right corner, search for "excess baggage".  A new window opens and that should answer your question.  It seems that you pay a % of the top fare, rather than a price per Kilo of excess.

Good luck finding out about the laptop.  BA allow a laptop PLUS hand luggage - but of course that doesn't mean SAS do.

Enjoy your trip.

Hi thanks for your help. Im actually from the UK but i'm under 30 yrs old so lbs make more sense to me!!

Excess baggage costs depends partly on the check in person and how full the flight is.  It is normally approx 1.5% of the one way full economy fare if charged.

You should be able to blag 10lbs with a good story and a smile.  I have been over double my limit and got away with it.

i'm 22!!!

Oops, sorry acw! just realised how terrible that sounded!  Thanks Bangkok, I was hoping that the airline might turn a blind eye over a few extra pounds, if they dont ~ I suppose 1.5 % will probably cost around 10 so maybe I'll try and cram as much as possibe as im emmigrating.

No worries.  :-) I really only made the assumption because all of my friends (and the heads on our young shoulders are not THAT old!) measure in stones.  I recently spent 6 months living in Germany and all the Europeans used Kgs and it was only the American student on my course who used lbs.

The only reason why I mentioned it was that I hoped to give you a link to a page describing baggage allowances/fees from USA to Europe with SAS.  Then I found that link wasn't right - and forgot to change my posting.

Talking of posting - have you considered just sending your stuff with the Post Office.  I did it coming back from Germany and it was LOADS cheaper than with the airline.  But SAS sound very generous/cheap in their fines!

Have a nice emmigration!

Arrggg, sorry, that will be 1.5% per kilo.
It is not just the cost of excess baggage, I think some airlines now have an allowance per suitcase which is not to be exceeded as the baggage handlers are not allowed to lift bags over a certain weight. I know when we flew last year, the people in front of us were made to spread their baggage between the two suitcases to be within the limit

The individual bag limit (for most airlines) is 32 kgs

If you are relatively small and light you could do what my Norwegian flatmate does and smile very sweetly at the check in desk (pick a male rep!) and point out that you weigh so much less than the average person that they should consider letting you on with your extra 10lbs!  According to my flatmate, the key is the right balance between flirting, cheek and comedy!

Some airlines have taken weight to extremes. They use it soley as a means to make extra money.

I live abroad and travelled back from the UK last week. to speed up travel i always go carry-on, and this time at check in they asked to weigh my hand luggage. (11.5 kilos) they told me this was to heavy as no item could be more than 5 kg. and i would have to check it in. i refused as it would slow down my travel and i had already made the first leg of the journey with the same bag.

after several minutes of arguing i repacked my luggage in three seperate carrier bags and weighed them. went through customs and saw Duty free multi packs with a net weight of 5.5 KG.

Where has the logic gone in this world?!?!?
