We are thinking of going to either of these countries at the beginning of September, not sure what they are like, so does anyone have any experience of them, likes, dislikes, etc, and also about the weather,

Boat from Split to Dubrovnik is lovely. Dubrovnik is fascinating. Good weather, lovely food, welcoming locals, much history.

Croatia is beautiful
Popular resorts and tourist places eg National Parks can get crowded; it has been popular destination for eastern europeans since soviet times
Beaches are mostly pebbly, rocks or even concrete platforms
Water is cooler than Med or Aegean
Dubrovnik is stunning - recommend walk around the walls
Quieter coastal towns are lovely and quite elegant
Islands such as Hvar or Brac are worth considering
People are very friendly
Food is good
Sailing/boat trips good
Hiring a car is easy but the roads and local driving can be 'interesting'
Rode down through Croatia and Montenegro a couple of summers ago. Both are beautiful, especially if you still to the coastline. Montenegro is more rustic and you can drive up into the "black mountains" after which it was named from the Bay of Kotor. Croatia is slightly more touristy but still amazing. Don't miss Split & Dubrovnik.

Rijeka is not so great. Zadar is nice - like a quieter, less touristy version of Dubrovnik and Split mixed together.

There are also all the Croatian penninsulars and islands that are so beautiful, with such clear, blue water it's unbelievable.

Unfortunately I was there in August so I can't vouch for the weather, but I can imagine it'll be pretty pleasant still.

Enjoy!
