Were flying to Chicago, staying 5 nights, then hiring a car to go see the surrounding area - any tips on what places are worth a visit and are within driving distance?

We went to Chicago for a week last year - stayed at a Holiday Inn just off Michigan Avenue. We did not hire a car, but used public transport (bus and The 'El') to get around. If you are into architecture, then Frank Lloyd Wrights house in Oak Park is a must (via the El). Go on the tour with on of the volunteers - excellent. There are also many examples of his houses in the area, again all walkable if you are able bodied. There is also the Robie house on the University Campus. As for other things, the Shedd Aquarium is very impressive, and the view (on a clear day) from the Hancock Tower is fantastic. Sorry I can't help on what there is further afield, but Chicago is probably my favourite city in the US. Enjoy!
