i have access to a car, and don't mond a long drive - do you reckon it'd be better to drive to scotland park up then ply accross or even ferry if poss? I would like to avoid a long layover and those destination seem to involve a total 12 hr journey
Question Author
ply? Mond?
Couple here although 4 hour wait via Glasgow or overnight via Edinburgh

Approx £200 return
If you don't mind the long drive, that's definitely how I'd do it. Cross the road bridge from the Kyle of Lochalsh and then drive to Uig to catch the ferry to Tarbert.
You can go via Glasgow and for more information visit travel sites
Flybe operate to Stornoway from Gatwick via Inverness. Seems to cost about £90 each way in February.

thanks, but i don't really want to go to gatwick (if i'm flying) the whole experience of Southampton is better
Although driving may be the nicer way to travel, especially when you get north of Manchester, I think driving may cost you much more in fuel than the flights.

725 miles x 2 Google maps estimate of £150 each way in fuel.

If the weather conditions were adverse in February driving wouldn't be much fun.
If you do decide to drive make sure you stop at Tebay Services between junctions 38 and 39 of the M6, and the cafe at Loch Inveruglas Pier.

there would be 3 of us (me, mr b and mini us)
do driving might well be cheaper (although not by much)
the 720-odd miles (shown above) will take you around 15 hours to drive, this doesn't include the ferry journey from Uig to Harris.

since there are only 2 ferries per day, some careful planning would be required to undertake this journey in one go, so an overnight stop is almost inevitable. this would likely make the driving option more expensive, notwithstanding there's 3 of you and the cheapest air fare is around £100 each, each way.
