If flying a photo ID is needed - not all accepted so passport is a good idea. Check with airline concerned.

None required except by the airline ( a photoid). But you will have to prove (if you are non EU national) that you are allowed entry into the UK and the best way to do that (if asked) is by producing your passport. Now if you are not allowed entry back to England...(people do slip in from the ROI) then a police cell is not the best place to spend the night is it.

Why do the airline require a Photo ID?for NI, Surely you don't need one for,say,Glasgow or Edinburgh? Odd!

All Low Cost airlines require some form of photographic ID. This is even if you are going from London To Glasgow.

Officially a British citizen does not require a passport to go from the Mainland to Northern Ireland. Travelled it many times

Brother in law took his wife to Jersey on a Citizen's Card. These are acceptable forms of photo ID for domestic air travel.

Sorry,but am I missing something?
Just why do you need a photo ID when travelling on Low Cost Airlines within the UK,what is the point of it?You don't need it on ferries to NI!

Is it so the airline can prove you are the passenger,and not bought the ticket from a tout?

The low cost airlines introduced a requirement for photo id post 9/11 for all internal UK flights, mystress. This was because most of them allow online booking and ticketless travel, and thus there is no proof that the person presenting themselves at the check-in is the person who is booked. 

It is not officially a requirement of the immigration or customs on internal UK flights, although they can (and often do) also ask for documents which prove your identity, name, address etc. 

Not all documents are acceptable to the airlines - passports, photo driving licences, and citizen's cards definately are OK; student cards, credit cards, work id, library passes are not - even if the photo is better and less likely to be faked.

Only photographic ID is required for this journey. Some airlines are more specific, check with your carrier.
