Travel Insurance For The Over 80S.

Next year we are taking my 88 year old Grandad and 87 year old Grandmother on a trip to the battlefields of Italy (Grandad's request - he wants to go back to where he fought and where he lost so many mates at Anzio).

Grandad is in rude good health. He has a prostate problem but that is controlled by medication. Nanna on the other hand has significant problems. She has to take medication for heart failure (heart attack 10 years ago); high cholestorel, high blood pressure. Saga want £700 for travel insurance (for 12 days). Anyone have any tips, please? It's costing each of us a grand so we want insurance in case anything happens to Grandad before we go (if Grandad were to die, the trip becomes pointless, although he's so bloody minded he'll not go before if he has anything to do with it).

This trip is REALLY important for my grandad and we are resolved that it WILL happen come what may, but travel insurance is proving difficult.

We will phone the travel company on Monday for their views (they regularly deal with veterans), but would like to be fully armed.

Age UK Travel Insurance has no upper age limit (and most medical conditions can be covered):

Many people on here have recommended this mob. An 82-year-old friend of mine with a heart condition found them to be 40% cheaper than all others who quoted him, including Saga & Co.

Your grandparents can apply for a 'top up' policy to complement the free EHIC. Ensure the correct site is used to get the free EHIC, as some other sites make a charge. www.ehic.org.uk The EHIC would cover state-provided medical treatment but it doesn't cover repatriation and certain other possible expenses. So some insurers are offering a top up policy to fill these gaps. There are some medical questions to answer and I urge you/them to be absolutely open about anything in their medical history that might affect their cover.

Good point, china, but I wouldn't recommend anyone relying on the EHIC for anything other than very basic clinical treatment - with pre-existing conditions, IMO proper travel insurances is a must.

The EHIC entitles you to the same treatment as a health insured resident of the country concerned.

ETA: Which includes unforeseen treatment that becomes necessary even when it is due to a pre-existing condition.

And don't forget that travel insurance covers lots of things that EHIC doesn't, including delayed flights, lost or stolen property etc.

Google Over 70s Insurance Barmaid, we are over 60s I've just done ours for a holiday in 2013 with Stay sure, there's also Age concern.

Well Staysure don't cover over 85s; Age UK were the rudest company I have ever spoken to and I have asked for my details to be removed from their system; RBL didn't answer the phone but I have one solitary quote!!!!

Try Avanti. They`re not bad. You can phone them up and do the medical screening instead of online.

Insure and Go claim to have no upper age limit. I got my annual policy with them this year and they even beat my usual (concessionary) one on price.
