Can anyone recommend the best place within the UK to take my 4 and 9 year old children on a summer holiday?

where do you live? Kids don't do great on epic journeys, so no good me recommending yorkshire if you are in cornwall, similarly, no good recommending isle of wight if you live in lewis. Do you want budget or posh?

I live in Yorkshire but we are willing to travel. I'm just wanting somewhere that's fun for them

Sounds corny but, Butlins is fantastic, my mum and dad have taken the grandchildren and they love it. Everything is geared up for children.

And the Isle Of Wight, mum an dad have taken the kids there a couple of times too, they like it there the most.

I would google best beaches Yorkshire. Filey seems to have good reviews. You dont want to travel too far as at that age they will probably appreciate the sea and sand as much as anything.

In Whitby I remember having the best fish and chips anywhere ever.

Not sure BigJack. I am going back 40 years. It was near the seafront and that is about all I remember.

For years we took our kids to Mumbles on the South Wales coast, just along from Swansea. It's a fair drive from you, but we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Mumbles is next to the Gower, which is a fantastic peninsular with the most amazing beaches. Caswell Bay was a firm favourite as it has easy access, car parking, toilets, a shop, and most importantly, a stream which runs across the beach which can be dug in and dammed all day long! There are plenty of other beaches to enjoy though, Port Eynon, Horton, Rhossilli (with a shipwreck), Oxwich Bay (we always had tea in the Oxwich Bay Hotel when we went there), and some brilliant beaches with less easy access, but worth the walk, Pobbles, Three Cliffs Bay (amazing). Plenty of stuff to do in Swansea and surrounding area if the weather isn't brilliant (bound to happen one or two days). Kids tend to enjoy the simple stuff, a beach with a bucket and spade, an ice cream, maybe a trip to the amusement arcade in the evening for a go on the 2p falls, and they're happy!

We are in Yorkshire, we used to travel down to Weymouth or St Ives for a couple of weeks every year for our annual holiday, for several years. Nice beach in Weymouth, and some lovely places to visit all around Dorset. Always a bit warmer than Brid, Whitby and Filey, which coming from Yorkshire are handy places to visit for a few days if it's nice weather. Great Yarmouth is good for children, used to be a lot for them to do there.

Churchwood Valley, Wembury, Devon.
Log cabins, all mod.cons. Small garden to each cabin with barbecue. Trees, wild life, birds. Beautiful beach, rock pools, sand, cafe. Shop on site for essentials. Laundry facilities. Stables nearby for beginners or more advanced riders. Took children there many years ago. Took grandchildren there a few years ago. Would love to go again.
