I hope someone can help me out please.I'm off to the USA next year so i had planned to renew my passport as it went up in March this year. However when i went to look for it i couldn't find it.I spent 3 hrs this morning looking fot it but to no avail.Too be honest i don't know when i could have lost the passport.

So i went to the post office to get the passport form came back home to get my Birth Certificate & surprise surprise i can't seem to find that.

So can anyone tell me how i go about getting a copy of my Birth Certificate so i can send it with the passport form. What kind of proof will i need to prove that i am actually this person. Will a NI card help?.Has anyone had to do this before?.

You can order a copy online from the General Register Office... here
Don't do that, it's much more expensive and takes much longer than ordering through the Town Hall of where ever you were born. I needed copies of certificates a couple of months ago and rang the appropriate Register Office , Lancaster (I 'googled' Lancaster Births Marriages Deaths to get the phone number), gave them the details and my credit card number, 2 days later the certificates were here. Only cost 7.50 each, as compared to the 27 (or whatever) if you order from the central place.
Using the site to order online would cost 7.00 if you know the GRO Reference of the certificate required (unlikely, but can be researched) or 11.50 without the GRO Reference.
