Depends on your departure point. If you're doing the A/M74 and M6 route then I would suggest somewhere north of Birmingham. On the other hand, if you're travelling the A/M1 route, then perhaps Newark/Grantham.
My daughter does this trip regularly and likes to stop here - Tebay - it does depend where in Scotland you are coming from though.

Hi Derekpara, you don't say when you're travelling, but there's a Travelodge at a place called Uppingham Morcott, just 8 miles off the A1 at Stamford, Lincs for £28 per room per night in the week after next. That the sort of thing you're looking for?
The Dalesman at Sedbergh (5 miles from near the Killington services - turn for Kendal but t'other way into God's own country) - about 50 a night for a room.....good food, small menu, and the famous rugby and x-country running school and town to wander around - the Hay-on-Wye of the north of England when it comes to bookshops.
