Anyone been lately? What's the beach like, and the funfair? Thinking of spending a day there whilst in New York in August.

I went there a few years ago but it was in late September. Its like Blackpool with Yankie accents. At this time of year it will be very, very hot and very, very crowded.

New York is a great place to visit but I wouldn't waste time on Coney Island again. If you want a day out, take the train out to Long Island...go as far as you can. Plenty of wonderful wild beaches and plenty of places to eat and drink. I think you start at Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan but check that out locally, as its a long time since I was there.

Cheers, Mikey. I'll bear that in mind. Blackpool with Yankee accents certainly doesn't appeal!
I've just looked at it on StreetView. Doesn't look in any way appealling
for a moment there I thought Coney Island Ireland ie Co Down - just a lump of grass with a cuppla of caravans. no, no, to that one.
Just had another thought, and the kids, if you are taking any, should like it. Manhattan is an island so there are lots of ferries. Take the Staten Island Ferry, or the Circle line, which will take you right around Manhatten. On a hot day, it will be cooler on the water and you can tick the bridges off as you go around. Take a packed lunch ( nowhere does sandwiches better than NY. Eating a Pastrami on Rye while sailing along is a wonderful way to spend the day ! ) Watch out for the Cable Car over to Roosevelt Island...yes, a cable car in NY !

When I was last there I took the train over to Brooklyn and then walked back into Manhattan over the bridge, Marvellous views !

Go to Ellis Island, where the NY Immigration was based until a few years ago. Millions of immigrants were processed there before being allowed in America proper.

I wish I was coming with you !
I think Ellis Island's still closed. You can probably walk round the island itself but not go in the buildings.
I've just checked and you are right jno. The Statue of Liberty is open but I am loath to recommend this. I did it many years ago, in late September
( crucially after Labour Day ) and the queues were horrific. It took hours to see everything and apart from the statue itself, there isn't much else to see.
