Looks like I might have to fly to Scotland from Bristol for a funeral. Both of our passports are out of date. I have a photo driving licence but my wife doesn't. Would a photographic bus pass provide enough id?

Which Airline?
SD has hit the crux of the matter...

It's nothing to do with legal requirements, it's totally to do with whichever airlines policy.

Don't know yet. Lady just passed this afternoon and so I don't know what the arrangements will be. Why? Does the ID requirement change between airlines?
Yes - for instance Ryanair insist on passports for *all* flights - even internal.
Unless it's a Vatican one.........

Give them a call and explain; ideally get an e-mail from the airline's HO to support your position......
You just need photo ID when travelling within the UK. It makes no difference what ID Ryanair need (for example) as they are not a UK airline. Contact your airline and they will be able to tell you
^ I don't understand, 237 - when we flew Stansted/Scotland with Ryanair, we had to show passports.
Well the only airline that goes to Scotland from Bristol is Easyjet (or BMI to Inverness) so it's Easyjet's policy you need. And yes my understanding is Ryanair require passports for all flights.
This is from easyjet, a bus pass doesn't look good enough:

Acceptable forms of ID on domestic flights include:
valid passport
valid photographic national identity card
valid photographic driving licence
valid photographic forces identity card
valid police warrant card / badge
valid airport employee security identity pass
I've used out of date passport on UK flights.it's the photo evidence they want not a valid passport
You could get a 'same day passport', not cheap but you can ring now (they are open till late) and make an appointment.
Ie in date passport....easyjet have accepted valid out of date passport from me on London flight in the past does that make sense ?
237 is correct if you want to look at the minimal legal requirements for travelling in the EU.. then you just need "photo ID"

But if an airline says you need a passport then the minimum required legal documents mean bugger all... they can set their own rules.
Asking easyjet would be by far the most sensible thing to do....
Why does one need a passport for an internal flight?
Will they be needed on trains next?
Why not just let everyone have an I.D. card?
Waits for the deluge.
Daisy, just because of that - we don't have ID cards, otherwise we wouldn't need to produce other evidence. This was on a thread the other day, from someone who didn't have a passport.
If Ryanair say that you need to show a picture of yourself standing on one leg and holding a giant carp, then that is their prerogative.

[ oh drat - I may have given Mr o'Leary another money making idea ]
It's only Ryanair daisy and there are more Whys that could be asked of Ryanair...
"Why? Does the ID requirement change between airlines?"

For the same reason that if you were to knock on my door and ask to come in I could say to you "unless you produce a valid UK passport you can't come in" whereas my neighbour might say "unless you can produce a valid bus pass you can't come in"

The property owner sets the rules, or, in this case... the airline sets the rules.
And people acquiesce? Not cost effective for one plane journey.
