can i travel to france on a voucher,go by ship, and not get asked for a passport, i have been told you don't need one is this true??

Could be possible - I've certainly had that experience going by coach on the ferry and also by Eurostar.  However, it's a good idea to carry your passport with you.  I'm sure border control are entitled to ask you for ID.  I presume you're British (as opposed to an American living in the UK who wants to get the ferry to France, for example).  EU citizens are free to travel within the EU, but it makes life easier if you take your passport with you. 

Due to the recent terrorist activities, France have reintroduced border controls so it's worth taking since UK citizens don't have any form of official ID.

 

 You do need a passport for France - They don't always check it - but if you don't have it they could refuse you entry.
