Has anyone driven this route? I am a bit nervous of mountainous roads, with sheer drops and wondered how 'bad' this road is. Any help would
be appreciated. I know there is a train, but we have already hired a car
for our holiday.

Have driven through Spain and Portugal many times....scariest part is the mountainous region in n Spain ! Eeek !
The mountain roads are a bit hairy - just make sure whoever drives is an experienced left-hand drive driver, and take your time.

From memory, the Ronda road is now twice as wide as it was years ago - now that was seriously scary, but it's OK now.
And don't allow yourself to be intimidated by the Spanish truck drivers....they come right up your bum and honk ....let 'Em !
True murray - they drive these mountain roads all day every day, and they are not overly patient with timid tourists.

That said, as you may well be aware, the rest of the world's motorists are far more fond of horn solos than the British - so ignore them when they toot, and let them pass when it's safe.

Thank you very much Murray and Andy - certainly going to take some thought, but well worth it at the destination. Thanks again !
Pleasure....hope you enjoy it !
The first thing you MUST do is take any stickers off the car that show it is rented. This sort of thing has been going on for years.

On google maps it looks like a beautiful route (with most it following the coast on a Mway until the last bit and all under 2 hours). I'm quite jealous, I'd love to do that drive.
I drove it the best part of 40 years ago and don't remember it being particularly taxing, but if the road's been widened anyway it should be okay.

Drive down into the valley beneath the bridge for a great view

Drove through the Pyrenees last March and hit a blizzards. Not a pleasant experience.
Don't know if it's still the case but Spanish driving rules certainly used to oblige you to hoot before overtaking
Stick to the main coastal road as far as possible. The drive through the mountains isn't on unmade roads so isn't bad and it's very scenic. Ronda is lovely.
I don't know about this route but this year for the first time we flew to Switzerland and hired a car to drive to Italy. I have driven abroad before, but in the States with their nice wide straight roads and automatic cars. Anyway, less than 24 hours after hiring a left hand drive manual car (yikes!) I drove over two alpine passes. I was a bit nervous before we set off, but I kept my eyes on the road, not looking at the spectacular (according to Mr Spudqueen!) views and was absolutely fine. Thinking of doing it again next year!
