I wouldn't have a clue but if you go to aa.com (could be .co.uk) or multimap and put in your destination they'll do you a directions and map and say roughly how long it'll take.  Then you could go to railtrack.com (again could be .co.uk) and put in the destinations and they'll do you a train timetable for it and say how long it'll take.  Then you could compare?  I think if you're going on your own I wouldn't drive as could be a bit fiddly trying to map read?...Good luck and happy travels.

Easiest way by road:

A354 to Salisbury, A338 to Beacon Hill A303 to M3, up to M25 clockwise, to M11 to Cambridge. About 180 miles, so probably around 3 hours driving (according to when you go. M25 is a nightmare Friday afternoon!)

Click here for a website about a recently-introduced service whereby you can fly to and fro Oxford/Cambridge. Check-in time 10 mins and flight-time 20 mins. So, the driving part of the journey would be on relatively 'quiet' roads, though the cost would be higher, of course. Only you can decide whether speed or cost are paramount.
