Has anyone travelled to Hawaii by booking their own flights and hotels?

 Yes i have been to Hawaii some time ago now.  We went to the big island and took a chopper ride over the volcano it was great. We booked our own flights and accomodation.  I would like to go back again some time.

Some years ago, yes - flew American Airlines from Heathrow via Chicago & San Francisco out and Los Angeles home. Stayed in Holiday Inns in the mainland cities and the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki. It was rather special splash-out occasion, I should add; we don't make a habit of staying in exotic 5-star hotels (not the Holiday Inns, of course!).  Beautiful place - desperate to go back there when I can afford it. Which Hawaiian island are you thinking of going to?

Thanks for your answer.  We are hoping to go to Oahu as we have friends in Honolulu, and Maui for whale watching.

Make sure you get a sunset cruise off Diamond Head, and don't miss Pali Lookout; we also found a visit to the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor very moving. I'm sure your friends will ensure you get the most from your visit. I wish I had friends somewhere like that.......enjoy!
