when i travel i only have 4 months left on my passport am traviling on ferry dover-calais can i still travel

Yes you'll have no problem. The only time you might need at least 6 months is if travelling outside the EU.

If you stay inb France longer than the four months you will need to renew it whether you are going to stay there or return
