If, when starting it, you need to wait for a light to go out before fully turning the key it's diesel, otherwise it's almost certainly petrol.
If the fuel in the tank smells of buses and lorries it's diesel, otherwise it's probably petrol.
If there's no 'Diesel' sticker under the fuel flap it's probably petrol.
