Must admit I have not been since the 70's but back then it very friendly. We went to a lot of traditional 'folk restaurants', absolutely fantastic, could not do enough for you. Food was wonderful. Shame it has changed so much.
Why anyone, with an IQ above single figures, should want to go all the way to Bulgaria, merely to end up in McDonald's, amazes me.
What a shame for your daughter. I've never been myself but know plenty of people who have and they've all loved it.

What resort did she go to?
Sorry to hear.Surely can't be typical though, or they'd have no tourist industry.
We went about 10 years ago and absolutely loved it from all aspects. A few people at work have just come back and said they had a great time (Sunny Beach). (Mind you, you do have to take care around the big black Mercedes' with the blacked out windows that are parked on most street corners).

Someone that I know went to Bulgaria a few years ago and he said that pretty much everywhere they went they were hounded by begging gypsy types.
I went to Bulgaria in the early 1970s. V.nice.

However, things have changed since then. They have joined the EU since then (this gives all new members delusions of grandeur). Shame your daughter chose McDonalds. I'm suspect she might have done better but I cannot be sure. Most of the Bulgarians I have encountered in the UK in recent times have been somewhat disagreeable so I can imaginethose still in their homeland may be similar.
Went there once. Hotel plumbing so hopeless that the bath emptied straight on to the bathroom floor. Food dull. Black Sea forbidden to swimmers. ( Life-saver said it was too cold, but it seemed it was always like that, so don't expect to swim if you go there - no hotel pool.) But one advantage was the nearby casino - one of the machines was so faulty that we won a fortune in gambling chips. But we couldn't change them into any useful currency, so we had to gamble them all away.
And hardly any of the hotel staff spoke English.
No possible chance I'd ever go back, not if you paid me.
You should have visited the USSR 40 years ago. Talk about primitive! It took me a while to work out that when you sat on the toilet you were meant to face the back wall and not the door!

We stopped at the Victoria Place Sunny Beach, Staff, no problems, the owners son was a champ racing driver, I went to speak to this bloke, the staff were told not to look or even speak to him, I was also advised to do the same! Why? status does not interest me, I spent 20mins taking about his BMW M6, He was ok to speak to.
Relatives went to Bulgaria a few years ago and said it was an 'experience not a holiday'. Brother went a couple of years ago and hated it but his sister in law loved it.
I and a group of friends very nearly went to Bulgaria to ski, back in the early 80's....glad we didn't though, as all reports were awful.

Sunny Beach doesn't look like my kind of place at all....lots of high-rise hotel...bit like Benidorm, without the charm (!)

Apart from the obvious cheap prices, I can't see any good reason to go there really.

she got back today and to top it off after putting case through it got broke into and and jewellery taken luckily it was only primark stuff but them thieving prats so thick probably thought it was gold , what a horrible plave horrible people shes told me so many stories too much to type i wouldnt go there if it was free vile place by sound of it
Actually, jackdaw, I did visit the USSR 40 years ago. The oddest thing was the washbasins, which had (not a plug hole, but) about 50 small holes in the middle so you couldn't stop the water draining away. One of our group knew about this, and had brought a rubber dinner-mat which covered the holes perfectly.
Food was dreary, ( lots of kasha) but good bread, butter, jam. Only things to drink were vodka, tea and kvass. Bureaucracy was dreadful.
I went on a tour a couple of years ago; the people all seemed nice (we ate in a couple of private homes as well as hotels), the scenery was attractive, and the painted monasteries were wonderful. The food was nothing special, but hardly bad enough to drive me to a Big Mac. Did your daughter book a UK package deal? Tell them about it, if so.
