Has anyone had experience of booking a trip. Is it better to wait until you get there? Any companies you can recommend that are British based?

Wow, I done this many many years ago. We booked our trip whilst we were there.
Don't forget to take a cornetto with you!!! Lol.
Traghetto Santa Sofia on YouTube.
There is another type of gondola which is like a ferry and only crosses back and forth across the main canals. It costs less than a euro and, though a very short trip, gives you an idea of what it is like without spending a huge amount.
I remember going on a gondola about10 years ago. And I remember it was 80€ then for the two of us, I can't remember how long the trip was, maybe an hour. It is. Wry expensive, but hey, you are in Venice and may never have the chance again.
even the regular ferries - vaporetti - are expensive: one ride, even a short cross-canal hop, costs something like £5.50. You can get a day pass for about £15, three days for £30, which are slightly better value.
