I think you can get to London in less than two hours from there.

Why do you have to go directly from P&S? Petersfield also gives a good rang of destinations as does Cosham and The Hard is the end/start of lots as well..
In fact you can get directly to London Waterloo and then can go anywhere inLondon. Watch a show or something with a nice restaurant. We often go to The Travel Lodge in Woolich as it is very close to the underground.
Trains to Cardiff serve Salisbury (1:16), Bath (2:10)
Trains to Brighton (1:20)
Each of these routes serve other towns that may suit you.
With a simple change at Southampton you can reach Bournemouth (1:35)

hi cassa, it's 2 70 year olds who do not want to change trains. They could probably get to cosham just as easily, if there were some nicer destinations from there. London is out
Which station is preferred - Portsmouth and Southsea or Cosham?

ummmmm, thinking about it, probably cosham jj
At a little over your target time, Great Western trains run directly to Bath Spa (2h 9m) and Bristol (2h 21m). There are no major tourist towns on the way though:
https://www.gwr.com/~/media/gwr/pdfs/timetables/december-timetables/cardiff-and-bristol-to-the-south-coast-c3.pdf?la=en

Southern trains run directly to Worthing (53m) and Brighton (1h 15m):

Southern also operate to London Victoria (1h 54m):

Southwest Trains operate to Guildford (55m), Woking (1h 5m) and London Waterloo (1h 31m):

Their alternative route into Waterloo (taking 2h 8m) goes via Winchester (54m) and Basingstoke (1h 15m):

Those appear to be the only principal destinations served directly, on a regular basis, from Portsmouth & Southsea.

Out of that lot I'd recommend Brighton, simply because it has something for everyone at any time of year:

Winchester is also well worth considering:

I've been to Bath from Cosham. Some lovely places to see and gentle walks.

You could get to Brighton on the 700 bus but I think it is longer than two hours lol.

Winchester is very nice and TBH you would only need a weekend to see it all anyway and it doesn't take too long to get there.
Worthing??
//There are no major tourist towns on the way though: //

do you not rate Salisbury then, Chris? :-)
My mum and dad are in their 70s and they always go to Warner adult only hotels. Mind you they live in Drayton and go in the car to get the ferry to the Isle of Wight and always stay at Bembridge Coast Hotel at least once a month. They are Creatures of habit but they enjoy it.
Probably not relevant, but to clarify an earlier post, you can no longer get from Portsmouth to Brighton on one 700 bus - you now have to change twice, at Chichester or Bognor then again at Littlehampton.

Splitting the 700 into three sections was done to "... improve the punctuality, reliability and frequency of this service".

Note that from Buenchico's list, only the Great Western Trains, and the SWTrains via Winchester service Cosham. (All the rest head east after Fratton)
Ooops, the Southern Southampton-Victoria service does call at Cosham (but not at Portsmouth).
... and the same applies to Southampton - Brighton.
Sorry if I've muddied the waters, it's all a bit complicated because of the triangle to the east of Cosham.

I speak from experience of having used all these services.
Lol Canary42.

I now use Petersfield for most outward journeys. They have better parking as well
Half my post wasn't posted
Did you manage a weekend away bednobs?
