It depends on the time frame really - if you can book about 8 weeks in advance and specify your trains you should get cheaper fares (although some tickets are not available for sale further in advance than that). I'd ring national rail enquiries on 08457 48 49 50 and look at thetrainline.com - they ususally have slightly different info. Try for Virgin advance tickets and GNER tickets. I managed to get an off peak specified train ticket from Durham to London for �20, booking about 6 weeks in advance, with GNER. As a general rule, trains are extortionate though.
