airport security

I have recently been to america and at the airport i went through two security machines. the first was a metal detactor and the second was some sort of air blowing device!

does anybody know what this is and what it does?

It sounds like an 'electronic sniffer'. Used to detect drugs or explosives, depending on what it is calibrated to search for and analyse.

 

Either that or it's some sort of hairdryer / styler to give you that 'just stepped out of a salon' look in the event of some air emergency, so that you can step out of the wreckage with immaculate hair in true Hollywood Disaster Movie style.
