Does this still exist? Did it ever? I kind of got to thinking the North must have the most benefits these days. I know there have been plenty troubles north of ....wherever..... but nowadays it seems so much cheaper to live in the Northern end of the country.

supply and demand: the south is more expensive because more people want to live there, so there's competition for houses especially; up north, if you want to sell things to poorer people you have to keep prices down or they won't sell. (No offence intended to anyone north or south.) Having said that, I was surprised to read the other day that there's actually more unemployment in London than elsewhere, because jobs is one of the things people go south for.

Weather may play a part too: you just don't get bitter winters in the south any more (fingers crossed), and London is always a degree or two warmer than the rest of the region, as big cities often are. This does play a part in quality of life.

Yes, there's still a north/south divide, but, keep it quiet, the north is better. It's a higher standard of living, better housing, better countryside, much nicer people not to mention lighter nights in the summer when we all want to be out and about doing things (who cares in the winter!). I've lived in both the south east and the south west but much prefer the north.
