Pilatus is a little higher and boasts the steepest rack railway in the world, with horizontal cogs (most have a single cog which sits vertically in the rack). We spent about 4 hours doing Pilatus and about half that for Rigi. Views from both are similar in style but of different parts of the lake - either is a waste of time if visibilty is poor.
Perhaps an advantage of Rigi is that you can do a circular trip - up on one train and down a different one.
We were amused on the way down the Rigi to see the ticket collector walking down the outside of the train on the running board to check tickets - no health and safety for him.
It's worth walking the city walls in Lucerne and the Transport Museum is very good if you get a wet day.
