Ryanair Grrrrr!
My daughter and three of her friends are currently in Lisbon and are due to return to Brussels tomorrow. Yesterday, they were informed by Ryanair that their flight has been cancelled.
The earliest alternative flight which Ryanair were able to offer was on Thursday which was completely inacceptable - apart from anything else because the girls have to get back to work and my daughter has a 14-month old baby back at home.
My wife and I plus the 4 girls started scouring the Internet to try to find alternative travel and routing. Unfortunately, everything seemed to be fully booked or at extremely high prices (it is the Pentecost bank holiday here). Finally, we found that the cheapest (but still expensive) way to get back would be to take a train from Lisbon to Faro, a flight back to Lisbon, and a flight from Lisbon to Brussels! This sounds ridiculous but we booked the flights and the girls have bought the train tickets. This was late on a Sunday afternoon and it was very clear that if we waited, it might be impossible to get 4 air tickets for Tuesday at such a busy time.
I have read Ryanair's Conditions of Travel and imagine that they would try to wriggle out of any form of compensation by claiming "Extraordinary circumstances". In other words, the girls would only get about half of the €75 cost of the original return ticket.
Does anybody have a similar experience? Were you able to get any compensation from Ryanair apart from a refund of the ticket cost?

According to the law, you are eligible to claim compensation for cancelled flights if:
you were not informed by the airlines before 7 days,
If you were informed between 7 days to 14 days, you also have the right to ask for reimbursement and you should get the full refund of your flight ticket cost within 7 days; if the new arrival time was substantially different from the scheduled flight of which you had booked your ticket.
