Ryan Air Luggage Allowance - Confused

i flew from dublin to sofia recenlty with KLM on their website it said the same as ryanair website in that you can take a small case say 2ftx2frx1ft diametre forget the exact measurements but a small case...ok so i went to checkin and they charged me 30 euro !!!

on way back however on checkin my bags were checked all way back to dublin - no problems and free .

so , im looking to go away in sept flying ryanair this time...is the same bag free ? im looking on website that anything up to 15kilo is free ..is that right ?

When you complain / seek compensation for the delay to your baggage, why not ask KLM why it charged you on the outbound flight but not on the return?

It's not just size it's weight for cabin bags. First guess is on the way out with KLM your bag weighed too much.
First glance at Ryanair's bag rules says to me that a max of 10Kg is allowed. 15kg is a hold case and they are never free!

With Ryanair you can pack a suitcase to go underneath in the cargo hold (for a charge).
You can also take a smaller cabin bag, Max size 55x40x20 cm weighing no more than 10kg. This must also be paid for OR can go into the hold with the big bags for free.
If you wish to take anything on board with you it must be in a small enough bag to fit under the seat in front of you. The maximum size for this is quoted as 35x20x20cm but no weight limit is mentioned.

they make it very difficult to understand...must be to try trip you up when you get to airport to charge you more.

am i right in saying that this bag is free ( Cabin Baggage 55cm x 40cm x 20cm 10kg ) and can go into cabin with you.

why then do they say that you can carry on a cabin bag but if its more than 10kilo then they must put into hold ( they fail to say if this is free or not )

basically im going away for 4 nights so i will definately stay below 10 kilo

You can take it with you, but unless you've paid for Priority boarding, it will be taken off you at the gate, and put in the hold (for free).

Your error with Ryanair shows up in your sentence which reads "so i went to checkin and they charged me 30 euro".

You SHOULDN'T have gone to the baggage check-in desk as they apply a charge to anything that they put into the hold. (They have to assume that it's additional to any hand baggage you might want to take onto the plane).

ALL passengers with Ryanair can take TWO bags TO THE GATE. As long as they both meet the relevant dimensions (i.e. no more than 35 x 20 x 20cm for the small one and no more than 55 x 40 x20cm for the large one, which must also weigh no more than 10kg) there will be NO CHARGE.

However only passengers who've paid for 'Priority' can take the larger bag on board. Anyone else will have their larger bag placed into the hold (meaning that they'll have to wait for it in the baggage reclaim area upon arrival).

So (unless you've got more baggage than the two items I've mentioned above) you shouldn't go anywhere near the baggage check-in desk on your next Ryanair flight. You should simply take your two bags to the gate.

Those two bags (with a maximum weight of 10kg for the larger one, and NOT the 15kg you referred to in your post) are all that you can take for free. If you need to take additional bags (which you'll have to take to the baggage check-in point) you'll be charged £25 (or €25) per bag if you book them in online or £40 (€40) if you simply turn up at the airport with them. You're allowed a maximum of 3 such bags, with a maximum weight of 20kg each.
