So, how do you do it? Well, lets assume that you want to assign a shortcut key to . (Thats 'o' with an umlaut if AB's software hasn't reproduced it properly):
Click 'Insert'. Click 'Symbol'. If you always use the same font, select that font at the top left. Otherwise select '(normal text)' - it should be the first item in the list. Locate the character you want, , and click on it. Click 'Shortcut Key'. Now you need to choose a key to use (along with Alt) for your shortcut. You can have whatever you like but the most obvious key is 'o'. Type' Alt' & 'o' simultaneously. 'Alt+O' appears in the box labelled 'Press new shortcut key'. Click 'Assign'. Click 'Close'. (Repeat the procedure to create further shortcuts). Now, whenever you use Word, typing Alt+o will give you .
As I 've said, it takes a few minutes to do but it'll save you lots of time in the future.

I had to remember just to type an umlaut or . So I bought myself a german keyboard from ebay..brand new ..a Dell one for a tenner ..including postage and it has solved all my problems. It's got the french accents on it as well.

Click here and scroll down to the heading Extended ASCII Codes. There you will see, for example, that pressing Alt whilst simultaneously typing 129 on the numeric keypad to the right of your keyboard should produce . If you need to do this often, just add the web-page to your favourites. Personally, I keep a small list by my computer of the commonly required ones. Good luck.
