Travel To Northern Ireland

Hi.
Has anyone recently travelled to Northern Ireland and did you need a passport?
I am planning a visit but my passport has expired and I don't particularly want to get it renewed as I don't travel anywhere outside the UK. I was given to understand from some sites that a driving licence and means of identification would suffice so any thoughts ?

Check with airline that you are flying with as some accept driving license as id- ferries rarely ask for ID

It depends on the airline. You would do if you fly with Ryanair. Best things to do is get hold of who flies from your departure airport to Belfast.

You need a passport to get past airport security. So yes you need a passport.

The OP needs to provide more information. IE, how are they travelling and with who (company)

If you are taking ferry, then no, a passport isn't specifically required.

I would however contact the ferry company and enquire to be sure.

Regardless, some form of ID will certainly be essential.

I travel several times a year between Northern Ireland and GB and you do not need a passport!

you do not need a passport to go to NI or ROI, the airline will want photo id though.

I was talking airport security, not the country.

I assume though you just show an ID and boarding pass instead of passport.

depends where you're travelling from. travelling to Belfast via Dublin or Rosslare would be valid if you're travelling from south of (say) Manchester and don't fancy the grinding trudge along the A75...
