Most likely just charge you the duty but they can seize the goods and/or prosecute.
Remember that if the total value of gifts and souvenirs exceeds 145 you will have to pay charges on the full value, not just on the excess over 145.

Dzug's answer is correct. The chances are that if your goods were worth, say, 170, they'd turn a blind eye. If they're worth, say, 250, they'd levy charges. If they're worth 1000, they'd seize them. If they're worth 10,000, they'd seize them and initiate a prosecution. (i.e. they're more likely to use big-time penalties for big-time smugglers).

sometimes,, evan if u r not sure how much the amount is worth if u go through the red channel u might get let off regardless of the amount, as most customs officalls know who are smugglers and who r not,,,

if u r honest i blv they like that and might just wave u through....

Depends on what you are bringing in. If it is clothes take off all the labels and just put them in the suitcase. If it is jewellery, wear it. With gifts it is harder to hide them.
