Can My Friend Travel To America?

My friend was sentenced to 3 years in prison for gbh with intent, will he be able to travel to America when released? If so what’s the time frame and what would he have to apply for?

TBF they have no way of checking but if he does get caught they could choose to prosecute him for illegally trying to enter the US or worse and he could find himself in one of their slammers for a while. If he's lucky they'll just boot him out.
