Sometimes it works out cheaper if you book tickets to intermediate stations on the route. Not one direct ticket. Sounds incredibly but it’s true.
It is a direct train so an off-peak return is what you need. That having been said, it may be cheaper to do split-ticketing, i,e, Bristol to Cheltenham and Cheltenham to Bormingham.
I should have added, on by frequent journeys to the South-West my splits are Birmingham to Cheltenham, Cheltenham to Bristol and Bristol to Exeter.
You just take a train north from Breetol Temple Meads and bingo
Blimey I wdnt stop at Chellers unless I had to
Bristol - Birmingham, single advance ticket = 26-80.
Bristol - Cheltenham, single advance ticket = 11-20.
Cheltenham - Birmingham single advance ticket = 11-90.

so you can save yourself about £5 each way by splitting your ticket. note though that these cheap fares are not available for any train, you may find to travel at the time you want costs a lot more. of all the long distance operators, XC are probably the least likely to sell you a good deal.

as pointed out by klazomaniac, Megabus is cheaper, and takes about an hour longer than the train. £7-62 is the std single fare.
